Real Life Connect – Measurement (Class 5 Maths)

1. Length – Real Life Situation

Riya walks from her house to the park which is 750 metres away. After playing, she walks another 250 metres to her friend’s house. How far did Riya walk in total? Also name the instrument used to measure such distances.
Step 1: Distance from house to park = 750 m
Step 2: Distance from park to friend’s house = 250 m
Step 3: Total distance = 750 m + 250 m = 1000 m
Step 4: 1000 m = 1 kilometre
Instrument used: Measuring tape or distance meter
2. Mass – Daily Life Example

A packet of sugar weighs 500 grams. A packet of rice weighs 2 kilograms. Find the total mass in grams.
Step 1: Mass of sugar = 500 g
Step 2: Mass of rice = 2 kg
Step 3: Convert kg to g → 2 kg = 2000 g
Step 4: Total mass = 2000 g + 500 g = 2500 g
Instrument used: Weighing balance
3. Capacity – Real Life Use

A water bottle holds 750 ml of water. How many such bottles are needed to fill a 3 litre water jug?
Step 1: Capacity of jug = 3 litres
Step 2: Convert litres to millilitres → 3 L = 3000 ml
Step 3: Capacity of one bottle = 750 ml
Step 4: Number of bottles = 3000 ÷ 750 = 4
Instrument used: Measuring jar
4. Choosing the Correct Unit

Which unit is best to measure the following and why?
(a) Length of a classroom
(b) Weight of an apple
(c) Milk in a packet
(a) Length of classroom → metre (m)
Because rooms are long and metres are suitable for measuring length.

(b) Weight of an apple → gram (g)
Because apples are light objects.

(c) Milk in a packet → litre (L)
Because liquids are measured in litres.
5. Conversion – Real Life Problem

A tailor uses 3 metres 50 centimetres of cloth to stitch a dress. Convert the total length into centimetres.
Step 1: 1 metre = 100 centimetres
Step 2: 3 metres = 3 × 100 = 300 cm
Step 3: Given extra cloth = 50 cm
Step 4: Total length = 300 cm + 50 cm = 350 cm
Instrument used: Measuring tape
